BAGAN

Bagan is the ancient capital city of Myanmar is located in the central region and on the eastern back of the Ayeyarwaddy River, which is in the division of Mandalay. Bagan Dynasty prosperous from 11th to 13th century and is the birth place of Myanmar Civilization. Pali inscription named the city "ARIMADDANAPURA" which means "City of the Enemy Crusher".
 
In 1044 King Anawrahta's ascent to the throne transform the Buddhist religion to Theravada Buddhism. Thus Bagan became the first Burmese Empire which became the major centre for Theravada Buddhism and is a pilgrimage point for Buddhist throughout South East Asia. 

In the end of the 13th century ancient monument is said to have been over 4400. The preserving figure nowadays is quoted at around 2200.
